Shipbuilding: Remontowa delivers an innovative 350-DWT


Remontowa Shipbuiding, a member of Remontowa Holding, in Gdansk Poland delivered impressive and innovative ships in 2020. In October, the third in a series of four hybrid electric ferries for a Norwegian customer began sea trials, and the fourth bi-fuel (LNG / Diesel Electric) for British Columbia was under construction; sophisticated ships were built and delivered to foreign buyers.

Internally, the courtyard has also been very busy. Two ships were delivered to the Polish maritime authorities in Szczecin and Gdynia. These 60.1 x 13.4 m multipurpose vessels replaced a pair of aging boats.

Poland’s history in maritime research continues with the delivery of two multi-purpose vessels. The diesel-electric engine has as much capacity as a Swiss army knife. In addition to maintaining Polish navigation aids and icebreaking, they are equipped to tow ships in an emergency. One of the main goals of their work is to conduct hydrographic research on water quality and depth contours. They are equipped with remote control fire monitors at the top of the bridge to fight against ship fires. Both ships carry the class notification allowing operations up to 200 nautical miles offshore.

The first hull, with a cast depth of six meters, was launched from the Gdańsk shipyard in July 2019, while the second followed in October 2019. Both vessels were completed alongside the shipyard. The ships are fitted with three 1350 kWe generators, each powered by an IMO Tier III compliant Cummins QSK50 diesel that will run at 1,800 rpm. Green technology has been proven successful on offshore support vessels where, depending on the work and power demand, the vessels can run on one, two or three generators.

The 350 DWT ships, named Planeta 1 and Zodiak II, have a speed of 13 knots. Accommodation is provided for up to 21 crew members and researchers. The design of the two boats was developed by Remontowa Marine Design & Consulting, member of Remontowa Holding.

The project is financed by the European Union under the Cohesion Fund, within the framework of the “Infrastructure and environment” operational program. One was delivered to the Szczecin shipping office and the other to the Gdynia shipping office.
