Follow Boating Safety Tips, Warns Alabama Marine Patrol
MONTGOMERY, Ala. (WTVA) – Alabama law enforcement is reminding boaters to be safe during the summer.
The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency’s Marine Patrol Division participates in National Safe Boating Week, which runs May 22-28. This leads to Memorial Day weekend.
From October 1, 2019 to September 30, 2020, the maritime patrol investigated 107 boating-related collisions, killing 14 people. The previous year, the maritime patrol investigated 110 boating accidents, killing 29 people.
“Many of these deaths could have been avoided by simply wearing an appropriate personal flotation device (PFD),” said FTAA Secretary Hal Taylor. “With your help we can make this long weekend vacation on the water safer for everyone, but it will require the use of PFDs and courtesy on the part of boaters, as well as an understanding of the safe operation of the boat and the dangers of alcohol consumption.
