FORT LAUDERDALE, Florida – Family members seek help as they search for two men who were en route from Key West to Guanaja, Honduras, when they went missing at sea.

Christopher Bush Sr., a 51-year-old Navy veteran from Miami, and his cousin Dionisio Sanchez, 69, the boat’s captain, were in one boat, towing a mate.

They left on May 5, but on May 8 they lost an engine and the last message their families heard was a Happy Mother’s Day message on a satellite phone before the two men and the two boats disappeared.

“I just tried to stay the course,” said Christopher Bush Jr., who is now desperately trying to find them.

Bush Jr. left his Broward County home on Monday and traveled to Honduras to help with the search. He says the men went missing 133 miles from Guanaja on May 10.

“After that we lost touch with them and it’s just a search from here,” said Bush Jr ..

He said the family had contacted the US Coast Guard, but “there’s not much they can do because it’s in Caribbean waters. They just helped with the drift routes from their last location.

Additionally, the observers also provided drift models that help rescue coordinators plan and focus their search efforts.

Bush Jr. has also contacted the Honduran government and several embassies and is raising funds online to expand the search efforts of his father, cousin and the two ships.

He said he hoped to hire private planes to conduct overflight searches around Mexico, the Cayman Islands and other areas where the boats may have drifted.

“I try to be positive day in and day out, but I know the waters can be very dangerous and I just don’t understand how it could go wrong so quickly,” said Bush Jr .. “We’re just trying to keep a positive attitude trying to get as much help as possible.
